ADVANCED PLACEMENT SCHOLAR AWARDS 2012
VIERA, FLA. - Each September, the College Board recognizes the many high school students who have distinguished themselves academically by announcing Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar Award recipients. There are several types of awards, granted for various levels of achievement. Although these are not monetary awards, the students receive a certificate and their achievement is acknowledged on any subsequent AP Grade Reports sent to colleges. Award recipients not only gain recognition from colleges, but also win the admiration of their peers, families, and communities.
There are four award levels based upon the test scores (5-point scale) and the number of exams taken:
· National AP Scholar Award – The highest award, National AP Scholar Award, indicates an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams taken and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.
· AP Scholar with Distinction Award – The AP Scholar with Distinction Award recognizes students who earned an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.
· AP Scholar with Honor Award – The AP Scholar with Honor Award acknowledges an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams with scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.
· AP Scholar Award – The AP Scholar Award is granted to students who earned scores of 3 or higher on three or more of these exams.
For 2012, there were 37 National AP Scholar Awards, 240 AP Scholar with Distinction Awards, 187 AP Scholar with Honor Awards, and 419 AP Scholar Awards for a total of 883 awards compared to 761 total awards for 2011.
Please see chart below for detailed information regarding awards by school.

Ronald McNair Magnet Middle School
The McNair Magnet School Junior Beta Club is reaching out to help soldiers in Afghanistan as well as victims of Hurricane Sandy. Students are currently working on two different service learning projects. The first is collecting donations for the East Bagram USO, Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan. Students are collecting personal toiletries, individually wrapped snacks, and chocolate to try to make the soldiers’ lives a little more comfortable. One student put her trick-or-treating skills to good use and donated a huge sack full of candy.
The McNair Junior Beta Club is also working to send monetary donations to the Red Cross to help with the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy. Last month, by selling refreshments at a school dance, the club earned and is donating $150. Beta Club members are planning to repeat that donation, after the next selling opportunity. Faculty and staff have also been asked to participate.
