For Immediate Release: January 25, 2010BPS Seeking Haitian Creole Speaking Volunteers
VIERA— Brevard Public Schools (BPS) is seeking volunteers who speak Haitian Creole. BPS expects to receive displaced individuals and families with children as early as next week, many of whom will not speak English. Volunteers will be needed to assist with student registration and to help students adjust to their new academic environment. Brevard Schools Foundation is also seeking donations to help pay for the cost of fingerprinting for these volunteers who will work with Haitian students. Because the volunteers will be working periodically with students, all volunteers who will participate in this program will need to pass a fingerprint background check before they can begin. Volunteers interested in helping should contact Lynn Clifton at 321-633-1000, extension 754. Donations to help with the fingerprinting expense can be sent to Brevard Schools Foundation, 2700 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, Viera, FL 32940. In addition to the funds to assist with fingerprinting, Brevard Schools Foundation is also accepting donations of school supplies for these students. BPS is also in need of assistance with the following languages: Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Russian, French, Gujarati, Korean, Portuguese, Tagalog, Thai, and Vietnamese.
